Abuja – The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a significant step to assert control in Oyo State by appointing a parallel state caretaker committee.
In a statement signed by its National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, the Wike-led faction named Professor Abdulrahman Akinoso as Chairman and Dr. Biola Olanipekun as Secretary of the 19-member committee.
The committee, which includes members like Prince Adewale Lukuman and Alhaja Risikat Kola Popoola, is tasked with running the affairs of the party in Oyo State for a period not exceeding 30 days, effective from December 24, 2025.
Escalating the Leadership War
This move directly challenges the authority of the Oyo State chapter led by Governor Seyi Makinde, who is a vocal critic of Wike’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu and has publicly stated his opposition to supporting Tinubu in 2027.
The appointment notice cited Section 21(2) (a-b) of the PDP Constitution as the basis for its authority, deepening the schism within the main opposition party.
This development in Oyo follows a similar pattern where the Wike faction recently set up a parallel caretaker committee in Lagos State, indicating a coordinated strategy to establish its structures in key states against the recognized party leadership.
The action is expected to intensify the internal crisis within the PDP as it grapples with two competing national bodies and multiple state-level leaderships ahead of the 2027 general elections.
