ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly denied reports claiming civilians were killed in a recent military operation in Zamfara State.
The military high command described the circulating death tolls as speculative and unverified.The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, confirmed that troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA conducted the air interdiction on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
The operation targeted a verified gathering of high-profile terrorist leaders in Tumfa Village, Shinkafi Local Government Area. According to the military, the structure was occupied strictly by armed bandits planning coordinated attacks across the North-West region.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, had alleged that over 100 civilians, including women and children, died during the blast at a local market. However, Major General Onoja maintained that official Battle Damage Assessments verified that several terrorists were neutralised.
He stated that no credible or independent verification has established any civilian fatalities.The DHQ reassured the public that its operations strictly adhere to International Humanitarian Law and standard Rules of Engagement.
Ground forces are currently executing clearance operations in the general area.
