₦2.5M Deep Freezer Deal Turns Into Fraud Trap: Police Arrest Suspect, Recover 25 ATM Cards, 25 Phones

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Tony Ameachi, over an alleged ₦2.5 million fraud involving an online deep freezer sale.

CDA News Nigeria reports that, according to the police, the complainant responded to an online advertisement for deep freezers on April 1, 2026. She transferred ₦2.5 million to a bank account bearing the name Abdulmoruf Abdulahi. The goods were reportedly never delivered, and the person she had been communicating with allegedly stopped responding.

She reported the matter at the Igbesa Police Division on April 4. Detectives began an investigation that eventually led them to Ojo, Lagos State, where Ameachi was arrested on September 22, 2026.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that a search of the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of 25 ATM cards, 25 mobile phones and 16 SIM cards.

Police said further investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly obtained utility bills and newly registered SIM cards from associates, who were instructed to use them to open bank accounts. The ATM cards were then allegedly collected and used for fraudulent transactions.

The suspect is presently in custody, and the police said the investigation is continuing. He has not been tried, and the allegations against him remain unproven in court.

Public advice: The case is a reminder not to transfer large sums to an online seller simply because of an attractive advert. Verify the seller, confirm the account details, keep proof of every transaction, and report suspicious dealings immediately. Online deals require verification, not just trust.
