11.18 Million Nigerians Now Under Contributory Pension Scheme — PenCom

ABUJA — The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has reported that cumulative Retirement Savings Account (RSA) registrations under the Contributory Pension Scheme rose to 11,183,475 in the first quarter of 2026 . This represents an increase from 11,040,227 recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025 .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the growth was driven by 143,248 new accounts opened during the quarter, showing stronger momentum compared to the 114,864 accounts opened in Q4 2025 . PenCom attributed the improvement to better digital onboarding processes and sustained public sensitisation campaigns . Active membership now corresponds to approximately 12.1 per cent of Nigeria’s estimated 92 million-strong labour force, leaving substantial room for expansion, particularly in the informal sector .

CDA News Nigeria reports that among Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs), Stanbic IBTC Pension Managers led the industry with 25,024 new registrations (17.47%), followed by AccessARM (10.63%), FCMB Pensions (10.15%), TangerineAPT (9.65%), and Trustfund (6.73%) . The top five PFAs accounted for 54.41% of new RSA registrations in Q1, down from 62.11% in Q4 2025, indicating intensifying competition in the mid-tier .

Female registrations accounted for 44.08% of the new cohort, while males represented 55.92% . Notably, 75.31% of new RSAs were opened by Nigerians under the age of 40, a demographic PenCom described as “the single most important long-term asset of the system” whose retirement horizon extends beyond 2055 .
