16 Military Officers to Face Court-Martial Over Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu

ABUJA – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that 16 military officers will face a court-martial after a special investigative panel concluded its probe into alleged acts of indiscipline, including an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement released on Monday, January 26, and reiterated on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, stated that the investigation identified a number of officers “with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” an act described as “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards” of the Armed Forces.

“Those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” the statement read.

Senior Officers Among the Accused
Reports list senior officers among the 16, including a Brigadier General, Colonels, and Lieutenant Colonels from various formations. The DHQ emphasized that the process is a “purely disciplinary” internal mechanism to preserve order and discipline, and will be conducted with fairness and due process.

The alleged plot, reportedly planned around October 2025, marks a significant internal security challenge for the military. The swift investigation and move to trial underscore the institution’s public commitment to constitutional order.
