According to Gbajabiamila, the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which provides for a dual policing system comprising the Federal Police Service and state police services, has now met the requirement of two-thirds of the 36 states.
The 24 states that have approved the amendment are: Adamawa, Delta, Edo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba, Zamfara, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Ekiti, Kebbi, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Abia, Yobe, and Kaduna.
“In line with Section 9 of the Constitution, the amendment can now be returned to the National Assembly for transmission to Mr President for assent,” the statement read.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the Working Group added that the draft National Policing Bill, 2026, is undergoing legislative drafting review and validation at the Federal Ministry of Justice and is expected to be returned on or before Friday, October 30, 2026, before presentation to President Bola Tinubu. The Group urged stakeholders to support a smooth transition to a dual policing system aimed at making Nigerians safer.
