Yenagoa– In a significant political realignment, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Governor was formally received into the APC by Vice President Kashim Shettima at a ceremony in Yenagoa on Monday. This move comes just 19 days after Governor Diri resigned from the PDP, the party under which he was elected.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Diri framed his defection as a strategic move for the entire Ijaw nation, stating, “This defection is not a Bayelsa defection, it is the Ijaw nation defecting to the APC.”
He cited internal party strife as his primary reason for leaving, accusing certain “undertakers” of being bent on destroying the PDP. “I do not want my state to be buried along with the PDP,” Diri declared, adding that he sought to protect the Bayelsa State Assembly from the fallout of the party’s crisis.
With this defection, the PDP’s control of state governments is reduced to eight, further consolidating the APC’s dominance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
