RIVERS ASSEMBLY BEGINS IMPEACHMENT PROCESS AGAINST FUBARA

The political crisis in Rivers State intensified on Thursday as the State House of Assembly commenced fresh impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.

This marks the third impeachment attempt since Fubara took office in 2023. The Assembly issued a seven-day notice for the governor and his deputy to respond to eight allegations of gross misconduct.

The allegations include:

1. Reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds.
2. Unconstitutional misappropriation of public funds.
3. Hindering the Assembly from performing its constitutional duties.
4. Illegal appointments without House screening.
5. Seizure of salaries and funds meant for Assembly members.
6. Seizure of the Clerk’s salary.
7. Refusal to implement financial autonomy for the legislature and judiciary.
8. Withholding funds meant for the House of Assembly Service Commission.

Previous impeachment moves in 2023 and 2025 were halted by presidential intervention amid the ongoing feud between Governor Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
