VENEZUELA FREES POLITICAL PRISONERS AFTER MADURO’S CAPTURE

Venezuela has released a significant number of high-profile political prisoners, including foreign nationals, in what appears to be a concession to the United States.

The releases on Thursday came just days after former President Nicolás Maduro was captured by US forces and transferred to the United States to face trial. Interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, backed by US President Donald Trump, oversaw the move.

Among those freed was former opposition presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, who contested the disputed 2024 election. Spanish authorities confirmed the release of five Spanish citizens, including human rights lawyer Rocío San Miguel.

Venezuela’s opposition leader, María Corina Machado, welcomed the releases, stating, “Injustice will not last forever.” The White House credited President Trump with helping secure the prisoners’ freedom.

Trump has stated that the US will oversee a transitional period in Venezuela and access its oil reserves, with proceeds used to purchase American goods.
