INEC Warns Non-Citizens as Phase Two Voter Registration Begins

ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned all non-Nigerians against participating in the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise which commenced on Monday nationwide.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated at a press briefing in Abuja that the exercise is reserved strictly for eligible Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above. He warned that the Commission’s system has been enhanced with biometric and data verification technology to detect and disqualify non-citizens.

The Chairman also urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register or who need to transfer or review their registration details to utilize the one-week window provided for the exercise.

Security agencies have been placed on alert to arrest and prosecute any non-citizen attempting to register, as such an act constitutes a criminal offence under the Electoral Act.
