Uganda’s Military Chief Threatens War if U.S. Flies Near Airspace, Escalating Sanctions Dispute

KAMPALA/WASHINGTON – In an unprecedented escalation of diplomatic tensions, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a direct military threat against the United States, daring former President Donald Trump and dismissing the U.S. military as “the weakest in the world”.

The son of President Yoweri Museveni warned on social media: “Trump do not dare me!… Me I will deal with you if you try come 100 miles near Uganda airspace.” The explosive statement is a direct response to growing pressure from Washington following Uganda’s contested 2026 general elections.

Immediate Trigger for the Threat
The threat comes days after U.S. Senator Jim Risch, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urged the U.S. administration to impose sanctions on General Muhoozi and review security ties with Uganda. Risch condemned the elections that gave President Museveni a seventh term as a “hollow exercise,” citing state-sponsored political violence and intimidation.

A Pattern of Provocation
This is not General Muhoozi’s first inflammatory international provocation. In 2022, President Museveni apologized to Kenya after his son tweeted that it would take only “2 weeks to capture Nairobi”. He was subsequently promoted to his current role as the country’s top military officer.

Ugandan officials have framed the U.S. criticism as hypocritical and driven by a desire to control Uganda’s oil resources, rather than genuine concern for democracy. As the war of words intensifies, it threatens to destabilize a key security partnership in East Africa.
