Southeast Presidency Must Be Earned, Not Claimed Through Sentiment

ABAKALIKI – The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that the Southeast region’s path to producing the President of Nigeria lies in concrete development and political unity, not in emotional appeals or agitation.

Speaking in Ebonyi State on Monday, Umahi stated that the presidency “cannot be achieved by sentiments, by blackmail, by hate or intimidation.” He made these remarks while addressing party delegates after his son, Osborne Umahi, emerged as the APC chairmanship candidate for Ohaozara Local Government Area.

A Call for Collaboration Over Confrontation
The Minister emphasized that historical grievances, while understandable, must give way to strategic collaboration and visible progress. He pointed to the ongoing massive infrastructure projects under the Tinubu administration as evidence of the current government’s commitment to the region.

“For me, at night, President Tinubu is lighting up our Southeast roads. You don’t even need a torchlight to see what is being done in Biafra land and our rural areas,” Umahi said, framing development as the foundation for future political success.

Context and Family Politics
The event also highlighted the intertwining of family and politics, with Umahi praising Governor Francis Nwifuru for nominating his son. Osborne Umahi, in his acceptance speech, pledged to focus on road infrastructure to connect farmlands to markets and create youth empowerment programs.

Minister Umahi’s comments serve as a direct rebuttal to those advocating for a Southeast presidency based primarily on regional equity, urging instead a focus on building a credible, consensus candidate through demonstrated performance and national engagement.
