LAGOS – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has announced a strategic shift to bring its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise directly to Registration Areas (wards) on a rotational basis, aiming to curb voter apathy and enhance inclusivity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Announcing the plan at a stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Ayobami Salami, stated that the second phase of the CVR will see registration units move across all wards in the state for 50 days, from February 2 to April 10, 2026. The final week will revert to Local Government Area offices.
The move builds on the success of the first phase, where Lagos recorded 139,251 registrations. Notably, 65% of new registrants were youths aged 18-39, while females constituted 54%, indicating strong engagement from these key demographics.
“This phase will focus on devolution by rotating the voter registration exercise in Registration Areas… to expand access and ensure no eligible voter is disenfranchised,” Prof. Salami explained. He assured that the Commission has made adequate logistical and technological arrangements for a smooth and transparent process.
INEC called on political parties, civil society, the media, and community leaders to mobilize citizens for the exercise, describing voter registration as “the foundation of democratic representation.” The initiative underscores INEC’s proactive steps to improve electoral accessibility and credibility for the 2027 polls.
