Adesanya-Davies Commends US Troop Deployment in Nigeria

Former presidential candidate Professor Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies has commended the arrival of United States troops in Nigeria, describing it as a positive step in strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the Kwara State-born professor stated that the deployment supports Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism and insurgency. She emphasized that the partnership focuses on intelligence support and training, in line with the Nigerian government’s clarification that the move is a coordinated effort between both nations.

“This development is a welcome relief in our fight against terrorism. We appreciate the support of our international partners in combating this menace,” Adesanya-Davies said.

The arrival of US personnel occurs amid increased international attention on security in Nigeria, particularly regarding violence affecting Christian communities. US President Donald Trump has previously accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from Islamist militants—an allegation the Nigerian authorities deny, stating that their operations target armed groups that attack both Christian and Muslim civilians.

Professor Adesanya-Davies’s endorsement adds a political voice to the ongoing dialogue surrounding foreign military assistance and national security strategy.
