United States Congressman Riley Moore has cautioned that efforts to strengthen separatist groups in Nigeria would further endanger Christian communities rather than protect them.
The warning follows Moore’s fact-finding visit to Nigeria in December, where he assessed claims of widespread violence against Christians. During the visit, he met with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, and visited internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by persistent insecurity.
In a statement on social media, Moore noted that the idea of dividing Nigeria “has not come up in any serious way” in his discussions with local stakeholders. He argued that empowering separatists would particularly hurt Christians in the North and Middle Belt regions.
“A destabilized Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent,” Moore stated.
The congressman reiterated his commitment to protecting all Nigerians affected by terrorist activities and disclosed that the United States and Nigeria have entered into a security cooperation agreement aimed at addressing violence and strengthening bilateral relations.
