The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the National Assembly to approve a proposed amendment to the Electoral Act that would mandate the electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
The appeal was made following the adoption of a report by NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, at the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Maiduguri. The NEC expressed concern over the Senate’s recent rejection of an amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3, which sought to compel presiding officers to transmit results in real time to the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal.
The council argued that the current discretionary wording in the Act—allowing results to be transferred “in a manner as prescribed by the Commission”—creates ambiguity and leaves room for manipulation and post-election disputes.
The NBA emphasized that explicit statutory requirements are essential to safeguard electoral transparency, protect the integrity of votes, and restore public confidence. It stated that “technology-backed transparency is no longer optional in a modern democracy” and urged lawmakers to align Nigeria’s electoral framework with global best practices.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to advocacy to ensure the nation’s electoral laws reflect the will of the people.
