Iran’s Retaliatory Strike Kills Nine, Injures 27 in Jerusalem Amid Escalating Conflict

A retaliatory Iranian missile strike on a residential building in Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem, has killed nine people and injured at least 27 others, as the conflict between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance intensifies .

The strike, which occurred on Sunday, March 1, 2026, directly hit a building in the city located approximately 19 miles west of Jerusalem. According to Israeli emergency services, the death toll from that specific incident rose to nine, with 23 to 27 people injured . Among the injured were three children who sustained head injuries .

Jerusalem District Police chief Avshalom Peled indicated that the missile likely made a “direct impact on the shelter” where most of the victims had taken cover .

Wider Casualty Figures

The Beit Shemesh strike was part of a broader Iranian retaliatory campaign. Across Israel, at least 12 people have been killed and more than 500 injured since Iran began responding on Saturday to the joint US-Israeli attack . A separate missile strike also caused injuries in Jerusalem on Sunday, with three people wounded, including a 46-year-old man with moderate shrapnel wounds .

In the Tel Aviv area, one woman was killed late Saturday by falling shrapnel . Several others were injured while rushing to shelters .

Regional Escalation

The Iranian strikes, dubbed “Operation True Promise 4,” have targeted eight countries across the Middle East, including Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates . The UAE reported three foreign nationals killed and 58 injured, while Kuwait confirmed one death and 32 wounded. Iraq reported two dead and three injured, and Oman reported five injured in separate incidents .

The conflict began on Saturday, February 28, when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and dozens of other top military and political leaders . US Central Command has confirmed three American service members killed and five seriously wounded since operations began .

Israel has extended its nationwide state of emergency until March 12, linking its termination to the end of military operations against Iran .
