Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti OFR, has taken a bold and commendable step toward expanding access to quality education in Abia State and beyond, formally approving the establishment of a National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) study centre in the state — and using the occasion to passionately urge Nigerians across all walks of life to embrace distance learning as a credible, accessible, and transformative educational pathway.
The approval, which has been widely celebrated by educationists, students, and community stakeholders across Abia State, represents a significant milestone in Governor Otti’s broader vision of making quality education accessible to every Abian regardless of their socioeconomic background, age, or geographic location.
Speaking at the occasion, Governor Otti described distance learning as one of the most powerful and democratic tools available for democratising education in Nigeria — enabling working adults, rural dwellers, physically challenged individuals, and those who could not access conventional university education to obtain globally recognised qualifications without leaving their communities or abandoning their livelihoods.
He urged Nigerians — particularly Abians — to shed any lingering skepticism about the quality and credibility of distance learning programmes, stressing that NOUN’s academic offerings meet the same rigorous standards as those of conventional universities and are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The Governor expressed his administration’s commitment to providing the necessary infrastructure, support, and enabling environment for the NOUN study centre to thrive and serve the educational needs of Abia’s diverse population effectively.
Education stakeholders have praised Governor Otti’s approval as a visionary and people-centred decision that aligns perfectly with his administration’s human capital development agenda and its determination to position Abia State as a knowledge-driven economy.
The NOUN study centre is expected to begin operations in due course, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to thousands of prospective students across Abia State and neighbouring communities.
