ABAKALIKI, NIGERIA – A 20-year-old man in Ebonyi State has confessed to killing his mother, stating that he committed the act after she allegedly refused to bathe him.
The suspect, who was paraded by the Ebonyi State Police Command on Monday, reportedly gave a chilling account of how he attacked his mother with a machete following a heated argument. According to the police, the incident occurred in a community within the state, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood.
“I killed her because she refused to bathe me,” the suspect was quoted as saying during interrogation.
Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is in custody and will face prosecution upon conclusion of investigations. He described the case as disturbing and called for greater attention to mental health and family dynamics.
Neighbors expressed disbelief, describing the deceased as a hardworking woman who had cared for her son despite apparent behavioral challenges.
The state government has yet to comment on the incident, but child rights advocates have called for improved community-based mental health interventions to prevent similar tragedies.
