KANO, NIGERIA – Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has declared his commitment to restoring the lost economic and commercial glory of Kano State, describing the ancient city as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s development.
Speaking during a visit to the state over the weekend, Obi told a gathering of supporters and business leaders that Kano’s potential as a commercial hub has been underutilized, and efforts must be made to revive its historic status as a center of trade and industry.
“We want to bring back the power of Kano. This city was once the heartbeat of northern commerce, and it must reclaim that position,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for strategic investments in infrastructure, security, and small-scale enterprise to unlock Kano’s full potential. He also called for greater collaboration between the private sector and government to drive economic revival.
Obi’s visit is seen as part of his broader nationwide engagement ahead of the 2027 elections, with political observers noting his growing influence in the North. His message resonated with many residents who expressed frustration over declining economic activity in the state.
The Labour Party leader did not disclose specific policy proposals but assured his audience that a future Labour Party administration would prioritize Kano’s economic resurgence.
