ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced a former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years imprisonment for money laundering involving N868.46 million.
Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges bordering on conspiracy, money laundering, and misappropriation of public funds. Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice James Omotosho found the former top treasury official guilty of multiple counts, handing down a cumulative sentence of 72 years.
The court ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that Nwabuoku had used his position to divert public funds through various bank accounts. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of assets traced to the convict to the federal government.
The EFCC, in a statement, hailed the judgment as a significant victory in the fight against corruption, noting that the conviction sends a strong message to public officials who abuse their trust.
Nwabuoku was appointed Acting Accountant-General in 2022 but was removed following allegations of financial impropriety. His conviction is one of the highest-profile corruption cases recorded in recent years.
