MAKURDI, NIGERIA – Nigerian troops have raided a suspected herders’ hideout in Benue State, arresting two suspects and rescuing a kidnap victim during the operation.
Military sources confirmed that troops of Operation Whirl Stroke carried out the raid on Thursday in a forested area of Guma Local Government Area, following intelligence reports of a camp used by armed herders to plan attacks and hold victims for ransom.
During the operation, troops engaged the suspects in a firefight, forcing them to flee. Two individuals were arrested, while a male kidnap victim was rescued unharmed. Items recovered included weapons, ammunition, and mobile phones.
“The operation was successful. We will continue to pursue criminal elements disturbing the peace in Benue,” a military source said.
The rescued victim has been reunited with his family, while the arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation.
The raid is part of ongoing efforts by security forces to curb the activities of armed herders and kidnappers in Benue State, which has faced recurring security challenges in recent years.
The state government has commended the troops for their efforts and called on residents to continue providing useful information to security agencies.
