Wike Pledges Stronger EU Ties, Moves to Reclaim Diplomatic Lands in Abuja

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pledged to strengthen ties with the European Union while initiating moves to reclaim diplomatic lands in Abuja that have remained undeveloped or underutilized for years.

Speaking during a meeting with EU representatives in Abuja on Thursday, Wike emphasized the importance of mutual respect in diplomatic relations and called for compliance with the terms of land allocations granted to foreign missions in the nation’s capital.

“We value our relationship with the European Union, but there must be accountability. Lands allocated for diplomatic missions must be used for their intended purposes. Where there is non-compliance, we have a duty to reclaim such properties for the benefit of the city,” Wike stated.

The Minister disclosed that the FCT Administration has begun a review of land allocations to diplomatic missions, with a focus on properties that have remained undeveloped for extended periods. He noted that the move is aimed at ensuring proper urban planning and maximizing the use of prime land in Abuja.

The EU delegation acknowledged the Minister’s position and expressed willingness to engage in discussions to resolve any outstanding issues regarding their mission’s land holdings.

Wike assured that Nigeria remains open to strong diplomatic partnerships but insisted that such relationships must be built on mutual respect and adherence to agreed terms.
