The leadership crisis in the Labour Party (LP) has deepened ahead of the 2027 Abia State governorship election.
Ceekay Igara has been unveiled as the governorship candidate of the Abure-led faction of the LP. Meanwhile, the incumbent Governor, Alex Otti, remains the flagbearer of the Sambo faction, also known as the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee.
Igara, a former National Vice Chairman of the LP, obtained his nomination forms directly from the Julius Abure faction. His camp insists the Abure leadership remains valid, pending the Supreme Court’s final ruling.
Governor Otti, however, has dismissed the development, describing any parallel nomination as “worthless paper.” Otti’s faction is currently recognised by INEC and the Court of Appeal.
Political analysts warn that the division could weaken the party’s structure in Abia, forcing voters to choose between two LP candidates in 2027.
Neither faction has indicated willingness to step down.
