JOS, PLATEAU STATE – The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area following a deadly attack that claimed several lives over the weekend.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang announced the curfew in a state broadcast on Monday, citing the need to prevent further escalation of violence and allow security agencies to restore order. The curfew takes immediate effect and will last for 48 hours, during which residents are ordered to remain indoors.
“Security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew strictly. Only those on essential duties will be permitted movement,” Mutfwang said.
The decision follows a Sunday night attack on Angwan Rukuba community by unknown gunmen, which left multiple residents dead. Community sources put the death toll at 27, while police have confirmed 14 fatalities.
The Governor, who earlier visited the scene in an armoured tank, condemned the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable.” He vowed that the perpetrators would be apprehended and prosecuted.
Security forces have been deployed to flashpoints within the local government area to prevent reprisal attacks. The government has also announced relief support for displaced families.
Residents have been urged to comply with the curfew and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
