Protesters Storm INEC Office in Abuja Over ADC Leadership Crisis

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Hundreds of protesters, including opposition leaders and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stormed the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on Wednesday as part of an escalating “Save Democracy” protest .

The demonstrators, wearing “Operation Save Our Democracy” T-shirts and carrying placards with various inscriptions, chanted songs including “We no go gree” and demanded the resignation of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan .

Videos from the scene showed prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark, leading the protest .

The protest stems from INEC’s decision to remove the names of Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC respectively . INEC cited a March 12, 2026, Court of Appeal order directing all parties to maintain the “status quo ante bellum” pending the determination of a substantive suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja .

The ADC has been fractured into at least three factions, each claiming legitimacy over the party’s leadership. The crisis escalated after INEC announced it would suspend recognition of any faction until the court delivers a final judgment .

The ADC youth wing had issued a 72-hour ultimatum to INEC, demanding recognition of the David Mark-led leadership and threatening nationwide protests if the commission failed to comply .

Security operatives were deployed around the INEC headquarters as the protest unfolded .
