Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has declared that he is now operating as a “freelance politician” with no direct ties to any political party . Mohammed made the remark on Thursday, April 22, 2026, while hosting former presidential candidate and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Peter Obi, alongside South-East stakeholders at the Government House in Bauchi .
The closed-door meeting, attended by prominent figures including former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa and Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Victor Umeh, focused on national unity and possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections .
“Neither PDP nor ADC is standing alone. I am a freelance politician now, and his party is also in limbo. We are looking up to the judiciary,” Mohammed told journalists after the meeting . He noted that both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ADC are currently navigating uncertain political terrain, awaiting judicial clarity on internal matters.
The governor explained that ongoing consultations among opposition figures are aimed at exploring potential alliances and cooperation ahead of future elections . “We cannot operate without a platform. At the end of the day, the current political situation may even help unify us and strengthen our chances of winning elections,” he added .
Describing Obi’s visit as symbolic, Mohammed said it reflects deliberate efforts to build bridges across regional and political divides . “He is talking about unifying the country, building bridges, and creating a new tomorrow for Nigeria. This is what we stand for as a state and as a people,” the governor said .
Speaking earlier, Obi dismissed speculation about political defections, insisting that the engagement was not about party politics. “We are not inviting each other into political parties; we are inviting ourselves to build a better Nigeria,” he stated .
The meeting comes amid a series of political consultations by Mohammed, who has in recent months hosted stakeholders across party lines—including leaders of the ADC and the APC—as realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections .
