FCT Teachers to Decide on Strike After ‘Fruitful’ Talks With Wike

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory are expected to determine the fate of their ongoing indefinite strike after a high-level meeting with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, April 22 .

The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, Comrade Abdullahi Shafa, described the meeting as “very fruitful” and acknowledged the minister’s commitment to addressing longstanding grievances regarding the rights, entitlements, and welfare of teachers across primary, junior, and senior secondary schools in the territory .

“The minister has promised immediate action on the issues we raised—some of which he was previously not fully aware of,” Shafa told journalists after the closed-door session .

However, the union leader stressed that while significant progress was recorded, the strike remains in force for now. The NUT leadership will reconvene at its headquarters for internal deliberation on the minister’s proposals before announcing a final decision .

“We will go back to the house and look at what has been discussed with the minister and know the next line of action,” Shafa said .

Wike, who expressed surprise that the union proceeded with the strike despite previous agreements, said he had intercepted Internally Generated Revenue allocations from the Area Councils and directed the treasury to pay teacher allowances directly to resolve what he called the councils’ “sole responsibility” to basic education workers .

The strike, which began on Monday, April 20, has disrupted schools and raised concerns over student preparedness for the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams .

The party's decision, announced late Monday, cited "unforeseen circumstances" but provided no further details. The move has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the convention's timeline and exposed deep-seated internal disagreements. The crisis intensified when former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, publicly accused party governors of excluding him from the race for national chairman. Lamido has threatened legal action if the issue is not resolved, further complicating the party's efforts to present a united front. This development raises serious questions about the PDP's stability as it prepares to position itself for future elections. Party officials have yet to announce a new date for the screening process.
