The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed why opposition leaders are angry over the recently signed Electoral Act 2026, accusing them of seeking to exploit real-time transmission requirements as grounds to challenge the 2027 general elections .
Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said key opposition figures were upset because the amendment removed what he called a “game plan” to invalidate elections where real-time electronic transmission is not possible .
“So, let me tell you very quickly why Peter Obi, Galadima and his friends in the opposition are livid about this amendment,” Morka said. “They were hoping to sell this dummy to the National Assembly and to Nigerians: that unless results are transmitted in real time, that becomes grounds to invalidate the election in 2027. That was it – it was a game plan” .
According to Morka, opposition figures were fully aware that internet connectivity remains uneven across the country. “Buba Galadima knows, Atiku Abubakar knows, Peter Obi knows, and David Mark knows that connectivity is not universal in all the territories and voting districts of Nigeria,” he added .
The Presidency, through Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, also dismissed opposition claims as “reckless, spurious allegations,” clarifying that the 2026 Electoral Act does not prohibit real-time transmission but simply provides that results recorded on Form EC8A shall be deemed valid if transmission fails due to network issues .
Onanuga described the opposition’s rejection of direct primaries under Section 84 as perplexing, noting that the removal of the delegate system restores party ownership to members. “The opposition is merely crying foul because the rules of the game have been adjusted to prevent manipulation, such as result hacking, which they have allegedly perfected,” he stated .
Despite the APC’s explanation, opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi have maintained their rejection of the Act, describing it as anti-democratic and designed to undermine the 2027 elections .
