Barely 24 hours after tendering his resignation as Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, April 22, and was captured on video directing traffic in a spontaneous display of citizen engagement .
Videos circulating on social media show the former minister, dressed in blue native attire, stepping into the middle of a congested road to guide vehicles while exchanging greetings with onlookers and supporters . The gesture reportedly occurred shortly after his arrival at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, where APC stakeholders and supporters had gathered to welcome him .
Adelabu resigned from the Federal Executive Council to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections . In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu dated April 22, 2026, the former minister stated that his resignation would take effect on April 30, 2026, to allow for a smooth transition in the Ministry of Power .
Addressing reporters upon arrival in Ibadan, Adelabu reflected on his tenure in the power sector. “I have seen, and I have conquered,” he said. “I believe I have tried my best and contributed my best to national development and oversee one of the key sectors in Nigeria” .
The former minister is expected to proceed to the Adebayo Adelabu Foundation office in Jericho, Ibadan, for further consultations with supporters and political associates as his campaign machinery begins to take shape . This marks Adelabu’s third attempt at the Oyo governorship, having contested in 2019 under the APC (losing to Seyi Makinde) and in 2023 under the Accord Party .
