Wild Elephant Invades Oyo Community, Kills One, Leaves Another Missing

One person has been confirmed dead and another declared missing following a wild elephant attack in Innayin community, Oyo State .

The incident occurred around 3:30 pm on Thursday, April 23, 2026, when the elephant reportedly invaded the community in the Iwere Ile area .

The Oyo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed the tragedy in a statement on Thursday night .

According to the police, operatives, local vigilantes, and hunters swiftly responded to a distress call. On arrival, the lifeless body of Ibrahim Tijani, aged 45, was discovered in a nearby bush with injuries consistent with an animal attack .

His remains have been evacuated to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation .

During ongoing search operations, another resident, Alhaji Muhammadu Bingin, aged 50, was reported missing after an encounter with the same elephant. Intensive search efforts are currently underway to locate him .

The police have reassured residents of Innayin and surrounding communities that measures are being taken to prevent further harm .

“Members of the public are strongly advised to avoid the affected area and report any sighting of the animal to security agencies promptly,” the police spokesperson stated .

Authorities are engaging the National Park Service Nigeria to provide expert guidance on safely managing the situation in line with wildlife conservation laws .

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, appealed for calm and cooperation while assuring residents that security agencies are on ground working with stakeholders to secure the community .
