Abia Govt Begins Community Vigilante Revalidation Exercise April 23

The Abia State Homeland Security Agency (ASHSA) has announced plans to validate and revalidate local vigilante operatives across the 17 local government areas of the state .

The exercise is scheduled to hold from April 23 to May 8, 2026, according to a statement signed by Ezinwanne Alili, the agency’s Public Relations Officer .

The Abia State government noted that the exercise is aimed at strengthening community security structures across the state and urged community leaders to receive personnel from the agency who will be visiting their localities for this purpose .

“All relevant stakeholders are hereby enjoined to be prepared to receive personnel from the agency who will be visiting communities for this purpose,” the statement read .

Background & Recent Incidents

The revalidation comes amid heightened concerns over the regulation of community-based security outfits. On April 17, 2026, a tragic incident in Amakama, Umuahia South LGA, involved a vigilante member who allegedly shot his girlfriend to death and injured two others . The suspect, Chinedu Anamelechi, was later found dead in an apparent suicide .

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) had subsequently called on the state government to enforce strict regulation, registration, and oversight of vigilante groups .

The revalidation exercise coincides with the comprehensive profiling previously initiated by Governor Alex Otti’s administration to identify, document, and regulate all community vigilante groups operating across the state. Authorities aim to develop a database of operatives, track their activities, and ensure proper oversight of weapons in circulation .
