A presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has issued a stark warning to opposition leaders, declaring that continued fragmentation could hand the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) an easy victory in the 2027 general elections .
Speaking on Saturday at the National Opposition Summit in Ibadan, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Hayatu-Deen urged political players to set aside personal ambitions for the sake of national rescue .
“Nigeria is at a defining moment. The deepening insecurity, the crushing cost of living, and the steady erosion of democratic space demand a collective response. This is not about personal ambition — it is about national rescue,” he said .
Hayatu-Deen cautioned that if opposition parties continue to operate in isolation, they risk entrenching the political status quo and prolonging the hardship faced by millions of Nigerians .
“This is not about personal ambition, it is about national rescue.”
He argued that the 2027 elections present a critical opportunity to redirect the country’s trajectory, but only if opposition leaders are willing to place national interest above party loyalty and individual ambition .
Heavyweights in Attendance
The summit brought together key opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi — all of whom have also joined the ADC in recent months .
Hayatu-Deen, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, also held consultations with summit conveners Professor Jerry Gana of the PDP and Kashim Imam .
He called on political actors to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate genuine commitment to collaboration, sacrifice, and shared purpose .
“Nigerians are looking for leadership that is empathetic, unifying, and capable of delivering real change. That responsibility rests on all of us in the opposition to come together and rise to the occasion,” he added .
