Bandits Hit Another Plateau Community in Midnight Attack, Kill Two, Injure Scores

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia attacked the Hwol Gassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday night, killing two residents and leaving several others injured.

The attack occurred at about 10 pm on April 25, 2026, when heavily armed bandits stormed the village, overpowering the local vigilante group before firing sporadically into the community.

A resident, Mafeng Gyang, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said the sudden assault threw the community into panic, forcing many to flee into neighbouring villages and forests for safety.

“The Fulani bandits entered our village and overpowered our youths who have been providing security for the community,” Gyang said, describing the attackers as armed with sophisticated weapons.

“They were armed with sophisticated weapons and started shooting indiscriminately. They killed two of our people and injured several other people. We don’t know the number of people who were injured because everyone was running for safety,” he added.

Gyang lamented that despite frantic calls to security operatives, no help arrived while the bandits operated freely.

Efforts to reach the state Police spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, and the Media Information Officer of Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Polycarp Oteh, were unsuccessful as calls and messages went unanswered.

This latest attack adds to growing concerns over escalating insecurity in Plateau communities, despite ongoing military operations in the region.
