Abia Enforces Centralised Transport System, Relocates Operators to Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal

The Abia State Government has commenced enforcement of its new centralised transport system, relocating all commercial transport operators to the newly commissioned Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia .

The ultra-modern terminal, commissioned on May 27, 2026, can accommodate over 340 buses at a time and is named after Professor Nnenna Oti, the INEC Returning Officer who declared Governor Alex Otti winner of the 2023 governorship election .

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced that full operations have commenced with a phased approach: first the Abia Green Shuttle buses, followed by informal transport operators, and then formal operators like God is Good and GUO Motors .

A 35-man Transport Monitoring and Enforcement Team was inaugurated to drive compliance . Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, urged enforcement officers to be humane, stating, “I did not ask any of you to intimidate or hurt anyone” .

About 80 to 90 percent of operators have embraced the initiative, while the government continues to engage those yet to comply fully . The terminal features over 62 air conditioners, 30 conveniences, 22 shops, a restaurant, and a motel .
