The family of a two-year-old girl, Winnie Akakue, who died at Wisdom Gate International School in the Eligbolo area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on March 17, 2026, is demanding justice. The parents have accused the school of negligence, tampering with evidence, and attempting to pressure them into a quick settlement .
The devastated father, Dr. Iasuaka Akakue, told reporters in Port Harcourt that the school initially claimed a bookshelf collapsed on her while she was asleep. However, he alleged that before the family was notified, the school had already taken the child to two different medical facilities, moving the bookshelf and cleaning the scene .
A verbal autopsy report indicated the child suffered a fractured skull, but the family has struggled to obtain formal documentation . While the police confirmed receipt of the autopsy report, they maintained it is a public document they would release upon formal application .
“We are just now waiting for the police to finish their processes so that we head to court,” Dr. Akakue said. He also alleged pressure through church leaders to bury his daughter quickly and settle the case out of court .
In its defence, the school expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating it immediately attended to the child and has been cooperating fully with authorities . However, following the public outcry, the Rivers State Government ordered the immediate suspension of the school, closing Campus 1 until all issues are resolved .
