Iran’s Defense Ministry has declared that the United States is no longer in a position to dictate its policies to other independent nations, as Washington weighs a new Tehran proposal to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz .
Defense Ministry spokesman General Reza Talaei-Nik said Tuesday that “America is no longer in a position to dictate its policies to independent nations,” adding that this reality “has become clear to the whole world through the resilience of the Iranian people and armed forces” .
Talaei-Nik stressed that Washington must “accept that it must abandon its illegal and irrational demands” . He also labeled the United States and Israel as “symbols of state terrorism” .
Nuclear Sticking Point Remains
The Iranian statement came as the White House confirmed it is examining a new Tehran proposal that would see the Strait of Hormuz reopened in exchange for the US lifting its naval blockade, while postponing negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme to a later stage .
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected that approach on Monday, telling Fox News that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon “remains the core issue” of the US campaign . “We have to ensure that any deal that is made … definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point,” Rubio said .
President Donald Trump reviewed the proposal with his national security team and “doesn’t love” it, a US official said, as it fails to address Tehran’s nuclear activities .
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump would state his position soon, while noting the president’s “red lines on Iran are very clear” .
Conflict by the Numbers
The US and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. On April 7, Trump declared a two-week ceasefire, which he has since extended . According to Iranian figures, 3,375 people died in US-Israeli attacks over 40 days of war .
Iran has effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began, disrupting a waterway through which approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil passes daily .
Negotiations between the two sides continue through Pakistani mediators, but positions remain far apart .
