A storm of internal resistance is gathering within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a former spokesperson of the House of Representatives has joined a growing chorus of party aspirants to publicly kick against what they describe as a deliberate and undemocratic culture of candidate imposition being orchestrated by powerful party figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Reps spokesperson, whose voice carries significant weight given his firsthand experience of the legislative and party system, minced no words in condemning the alleged behind-the-scenes moves by party stakeholders and godfathers to predetermined who flies the APC flag in various constituencies — effectively shutting out qualified, credible, and grassroots-connected aspirants from a fair and open contest.
Several APC aspirants across multiple states have echoed these concerns, alleging that the ongoing sale and submission of nomination forms is being manipulated to favour pre-selected candidates, with internal party pressure being mounted on other aspirants to either step down or face deliberate obstacles in the screening and primary processes.
The aggrieved aspirants argued passionately that imposition not only violates the democratic principles the APC was founded upon, but also alienates loyal party members, suppresses internal competition, and ultimately weakens the party’s electoral performance by fielding candidates who lack genuine grassroots support and constituency bonding.
They issued a stern warning to the APC’s National Working Committee and state party structures to ensure that the 2027 primaries are conducted with full transparency, strict adherence to the party’s constitution, and genuine respect for the democratic rights of every card-carrying aspirant.
Political observers warn that if the imposition allegations are not urgently and credibly addressed by party leadership, the APC risks triggering a wave of internal rebellions, parallel candidacies, and defections that could significantly dent its electoral prospects in key states ahead of 2027.
The APC’s national leadership is yet to formally respond to the growing anti-imposition agitation within its ranks.
