MAKURDI, BENUE STATE — Mrs Regina Akume, wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume, and Mrs Blessing Onuh, daughter of former Senate President and ADC National Chairman David Mark, have both secured APC House of Representatives return tickets following direct primaries conducted across Benue State on Saturday.
Results announced by the APC National Assembly Primary Election Committee chairman, Alhaji Sabiu Mahuta, confirmed that Mrs Akume polled 19,638 votes to retain the Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency ticket, while Mrs Onuh scored 17,451 votes to secure the Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The primaries, however, produced major upsets as six sitting lawmakers — five of them widely identified as Akume loyalists — lost their return bids to candidates believed to be backed by Governor Hyacinth Alia. Those who failed to secure return tickets include Dickson Tarkghir (Makurdi/Guma), Sesoo Gboko (Vandeikya/Konshisha), Asema Achado (Gwer East/Gwer West), Ugbor Terseer (Kwande/Ushongo), Sekav Iortyom (Buruku), and David Ogewu (Oju/Obi).
The outcome highlights the deepening power contest between the Akume and Alia camps within the Benue APC, with observers noting that the 2027 elections are already shaping up as a defining political battleground in the state.
