The Lagos State Government has announced an immediate ban on the movement of goods on public buses, in a sweeping transport policy directive that is already generating significant reactions across the state’s bustling commercial landscape.
The new directive, issued by the Lagos State Government through relevant transport regulatory authorities, prohibits traders, market men and women, and commercial operators from loading goods, wares, and merchandise onto public buses meant exclusively for passenger commuters.
Authorities say the policy is designed to decongest Lagos roads, improve the quality of public transportation, protect commuters from discomfort, and restore sanity to the state’s heavily strained bus network.
Enforcement officers from the Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA) and other relevant agencies are expected to begin immediate compliance monitoring across major bus terminals, parks, and routes including Ojota, Mile 12, Oshodi, and Lagos Island corridors.
The ban has however drawn mixed reactions. While many commuters have welcomed the development, traders and market associations have raised concerns over alternative means of moving goods, particularly for small business owners who rely on public buses for daily logistics.
As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government is yet to announce dedicated alternatives for goods transportation.
