ADC Crisis Deepens: Kachikwu Faction Dissolves David Mark-Led NWC, Adopts Him as Sole 2027 Presidential Candidate

The crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has exploded into a fresh and dramatic dimension as a faction loyal to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, held a Special National Convention in Abuja on Sunday, May 24, 2026, dissolving the Senator David Mark-led National Working Committee and formally adopting Kachikwu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The faction dissolved the existing NWC and immediately replaced it with a new set of national officers, with Abdulkadir Bashir elected as the new National Chairman, Johnny Derek as Deputy National Chairman, Kennedy O. Odion as National Treasurer, Chief Amirigoye as National Financial Secretary, and Dr. Chris Ugwu as National Legal Adviser.

The Electoral Committee Chairman, Elias Adikwu, announced Kachikwu’s emergence as the faction’s consensus presidential candidate shortly after the swearing-in of the new NWC members, with the party’s flag formally presented to the candidate by the newly elected National Chairman.

In his acceptance speech, Kachikwu pledged to lead an issue-based campaign focused on national unity, economic recovery, and inclusive governance, declaring that Nigeria was at a critical stage and needed courageous leadership to tackle insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and social division. He maintained that public officials must rely on the same healthcare, education, and social services used by ordinary citizens to promote accountability.

The ADC is currently split into three distinct factions — the David Mark-led faction, considered the most prominent and currently recognised by INEC; the Nafiu Bala faction; and the Kachikwu-backed group — each claiming to be the authentic leadership of the party. (ELANHUB MEDIA)
The Mark-led faction had earlier held its own national convention on April 14, 2026, where delegates amended the party’s constitution and confirmed Senator Mark as substantive National Chairman. That convention attracted major political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is among those eyeing the ADC platform for a 2027 presidential run.

Political analysts warn that the deepening three-way factional crisis within the ADC threatens to severely weaken the party’s electoral effectiveness ahead of the 2027 elections.
