The United States Mission in Nigeria has advised Nigerians applying for US visas not to use artificial intelligence (AI) or digitally edited passport photographs, warning that such images will not be accepted during the application process.
According to CDA News Nigeria, the mission issued the advisory in a statement published on its official X account on Saturday, stressing that passport photographs must be recent, unedited and accurately reflect the applicant’s appearance.
The mission stated that photographs should have been taken within the last six months and must clearly resemble the applicant to enable identity verification by US immigration and border officials.
It warned that the use of AI-generated, filtered or digitally enhanced photographs could lead to significant delays in visa processing.
The advisory was accompanied by an official flier reminding applicants that the US Department of State does not accept edited or filtered passport photos for visa applications.
The mission also encouraged intending travellers to review the official passport photo requirements before submitting their applications.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the advisory forms part of ongoing efforts by US authorities to prevent the use of manipulated images in official documentation as facial recognition technology plays a greater role in verifying travellers’ identities.
