FG Deepens Seed Development Drive for Food Security

The Federal Government has pledged to enhance Nigeria’s seed system and achieve food sovereignty through strategic policies, innovation, and global partnerships. This commitment was emphasized by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, during the 2025 World Food Forum Global “Seeds to Foods” Exhibition organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome.

Kyari highlighted the FAO–Türkiye–Nigeria South–South Cooperation Programme as a key initiative driving agricultural transformation. The program focuses on improving dryland farming, increasing food production, reducing poverty, and enhancing seed quality, with Borno State serving as the pilot site.

The initiative has introduced improved crop varieties, provided farmer training, and developed infrastructure such as irrigation systems to support year-round cultivation. It has also introduced 10 Turkish crop varieties alongside five local Nigerian types, established demonstration fields, and identified optimal sowing periods for higher yields.

To sustain progress, Kyari stressed the importance of policies that promote transparency, innovation, and private sector involvement. He also emphasized the need for investments in research to develop climate-resilient crops and strengthen seed certification systems.

The Minister praised the partnership with Türkiye and FAO, which has introduced new crops like lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans to Nigeria’s drylands, offering opportunities for improved nutrition, income generation, and climate resilience.
