Umeh, Nwoye, Onunkwo Win NDC Senatorial Tickets in Anambra

Three political heavyweights have emerged as the senatorial candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Anambra State ahead of the 2027 general elections, following the conclusion of the party’s primary elections held across the state on Friday.

Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Chief Ebuka Onunkwo have emerged as the NDC’s senatorial candidates, with Umeh winning the Anambra Central ticket, Nwoye claiming Anambra North, and Onunkwo securing the Anambra South ticket.

The exercise, conducted under the Option A4 direct primary format, began with the accreditation of registered party members, and voting commenced in the afternoon with impressive turnout across the state. The primaries also produced 11 candidates for the Federal House of Representatives and 30 candidates for the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The Anambra NDC Chairman, Ikem Uzoezie, expressed satisfaction with how peacefully the exercise was conducted.

Speaking on behalf of the winners, Chief Onunkwo said all NDC candidates in the state share a collective determination to take Anambra to the next level, adding that the state is blessed with men and women of integrity. “We are happy with the peaceful process, and we salute our party members for conducting themselves peacefully. With the set of candidates in our party for the coming elections, our state is set to experience populist representation that would take our state to a higher level,” he said.

Senator Umeh, who recently defected to the NDC following leadership crises within the ADC, had stated at the time of his defection that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including his family, constituents, and political allies.

Senator Nwoye, who represents Anambra North, has served as a senator since 2023 and previously served as a member of the House of Representatives.

With three experienced lawmakers now flying the NDC flag in Anambra, the party is set to mount a formidable challenge in one of Nigeria’s most politically competitive states ahead of 2027.
