A Nigerian court has handed down death sentences to four individuals convicted of terrorism in connection with the horrific 2022 massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State — a landmark ruling that brings a measure of justice to the families of the dozens of worshippers killed in one of Nigeria’s deadliest terror attacks on a place of worship.
The court, in its judgment, found the four convicted persons guilty of terrorism offences under Nigeria’s Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, determining that they participated in the planning and execution of the coordinated attack that targeted innocent worshippers during Pentecost Sunday Mass.
“This judgment sends a clear message — Nigeria will not allow the blood of innocent worshippers to go unavenged. Terrorism has consequences.” — Prosecution counsel.
The verdict has been met with relief and emotion by survivors and victims’ families who have waited years for accountability. Human rights groups and the Catholic Church have also welcomed the judgment. CDA News Nigeria will bring full reaction and analysis.
