Professor Anugbum Onuoha has officially assumed office as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa Ibom State.
The appointment marks a significant leadership change for the electoral body in the state as preparations intensify for upcoming elections and the 2027 general polls. Professor Onuoha, a legal scholar and seasoned administrator, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State and later Edo State, where he oversaw the conduct of major elections, including the 2024 Edo governorship election .
His nomination was initially made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2023 and subsequently confirmed by the Nigerian Senate for a five-year term .
Professor Onuoha’s deployment to Akwa Ibom comes after a period of intense political activity and security challenges in the region. He takes over from the previous REC and will be responsible for overseeing voter registration, party primaries, and the overall administration of elections in the state.
In his first remarks, the new REC pledged to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and to conduct elections that are free, fair, and credible.
Political analysts and stakeholders in Akwa Ibom have welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in his ability to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. As the nation moves closer to the 2027 election cycle, all eyes will be on the commission to deliver a seamless and transparent exercise.
