A United Kingdom court has remanded a 34-year-old man in custody over the alleged murder of a 41-year-old Nigerian national, Chinedu Okonkwo, whose body was discovered in his East London apartment last week.
The suspect, identified as Marcus Thorne, appeared before Thames Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with one count of murder. He was denied bail and remanded to appear at the Old Bailey on June 22, 2026.
According to the Metropolitan Police, officers were called to a residence in Stratford on June 4 following a welfare check request from neighbours who had not seen Okonkwo for several days. The victim was found with multiple stab wounds. A post-mortem examination confirmed cause of death as severe haemorrhage.
Okonkwo, a logistics manager and father of two, had lived in the UK for over a decade. The Nigerian High Commission has been informed and is monitoring the case.
“We are devastated. Chinedu was a hardworking, peaceful man. We want justice,” a family spokesperson told CDA News Nigeria.
Police have not disclosed a motive but confirmed no other suspects are being sought.
