Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has reacted to the arrest warrant issued against him by the Senate Public Accounts Committee, describing the action as shocking and unfair.
In a statement released on Thursday evening, Kyari expressed dismay over the manner in which the committee handled the invitation, insisting that he was never given a fair hearing.
“I am deeply shocked by the decision of the committee to issue a warrant for my arrest. I have always respected legislative processes and have never refused to cooperate with lawful inquiries,” Kyari said.
He explained that his failure to appear before the committee was due to genuine health challenges, adding that he had formally communicated his situation to the leadership of the Senate.
Kyari also questioned why the committee proceeded with the warrant without allowing him the opportunity to respond to the allegations in person.
The Senate had earlier on Thursday disowned the arrest warrant, stating that no committee has the authority to issue such an order without the approval of the Senate President.
Kyari called for a more measured approach, urging the Senate to follow due process in its oversight functions.
