South Africa has announced plans to charge the Nigerian government for the costs associated with deporting Nigerian nationals found to be residing illegally in the country.
The development was disclosed by South African authorities as part of efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement and reduce the financial burden of deportation operations on the country’s resources.
According to officials, the proposed measure would require the Nigerian government to reimburse expenses incurred during the detention, processing, and transportation of undocumented Nigerians repatriated from South Africa.
The announcement has generated reactions among immigration observers and diplomatic analysts, with some questioning the legal framework for such a policy and whether it aligns with existing bilateral and international agreements governing deportations.
Nigeria and South Africa have historically maintained strong economic and diplomatic ties, although relations between the two nations have occasionally been strained by issues involving migration, xenophobic attacks, and the treatment of citizens living abroad.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government of Nigeria had not issued an official response to the proposed policy.
Observers say any implementation of the measure is likely to require diplomatic engagement between both countries to determine its legality, practicality, and implications for future cooperation on migration matters.
