Lagos Commercial Driver Dies After Air Force Officers Beat Him Over Minor Crash

A commercial bus driver, Joseph Okpe, 43, has died after allegedly being beaten by Nigerian Air Force officers following a minor traffic incident on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.

The incident occurred on May 9, 2026. According to court documents, officers travelling in a Coaster bus accused Okpe of hitting their vehicle and demanded N100,000 compensation. When he could not pay, the officers allegedly punched him repeatedly in the head until he nearly lost consciousness.

Bystanders intervened and offered N50,000 to resolve the matter before the officers left. The driver was rushed to several hospitals, denied treatment, and pronounced dead at Charing Cross Clinic, Mushin.

A medical certificate listed severe head injury as the primary cause of death. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba. The Lagos Police spokesperson said she would provide an update.
